MedWest-Haywood’s Diabetes Treatment Center announces diabetes education session with Roger Baird on Monday, November 12

Waynesville, N.C. – MedWest-Haywood’s Diabetes Treatment Center will host Managing Diabetes: The Next Step on Monday, November 12 at 4pm at the MedWest Health and Fitness Center. The free, one-hour educational program will feature Roger Baird, a specially-trained member of the A1C Champions® Program, supported by Sanofi US, which provides a patient-led approach to diabetes education.

A1C is an important test that determines blood sugar levels for diabetes patients. Of the estimated 26 million Americans diagnosed with diabetes, 40 percent did not achieve the blood sugar control target level suggested by doctors. In addition to the 26 million who have been diagnosed, it is estimated that nearly 7 million Americans have undiagnosed diabetes.

Baird, who has diabetes, will share his overall diabetes treatment plan that includes, diet, exercise, insulin, and other diabetes medications. As an A1C Champion®, Baird knows first-hand the challenges of managing diabetes and understands the fear and uncertainty that come with taking insulin. Based on formal training and personal experience, Baird will educate attendees on misperceptions about insulin, how to achieve blood sugar control, and the importance of diagnosis and treatment for potential diabetic patients.

Community members who have diabetes, as well as those who may simply have concerns about diabetes or feel they could be at risk, are encouraged to attend to learn and gain support through the self-management process.

The MedWest-Haywood Diabetes Education Center, accredited by the American Diabetes Association, features specially trained and certified nurses, registered dietitians, counselors, and exercise specialists to support those managing diabetes.
