MedWest-Haywood Hospice and Palliative Care to hold volunteer training series in February

Clyde, N.C. – MedWest-Haywood Hospice & Palliative Care will hold a volunteer training series on Saturday, February 16th from 9:00am-4:00pm at Waynesville First Presbyterian Church and Tuesday, February 19th from 9:00am-4:00pm at Lake Junaluska First Baptist Church.  Attendees only need to attend one day or the other.  This program will orient volunteers to the hospice philosophy and program and help them to find their niche in hospice volunteerism.

The essence of the hospice philosophy is quality of life, allowing the patient and family to spend the last days together with dignity, with control over their situation, and as free from pain as possible.  Hospice neither hastens death nor prolongs life.  It validates the hope of living each day to its fullest with emphasis on human dignity and preservation of the quality and sanctity of life.

Hospice volunteers are an integral part of the hospice team in providing support and bereavement services to patients and their families in an end-of-life setting in our community.

Volunteer opportunities include:  patient and family support, companionship visits, respite care for caregivers; errands; bereavement support; delivering a single rose to the family after death; office assistance; chaplaincy and other professional services; fundraising and community events planning.

Please call or email Craig Summers, volunteer specialist, at 452-5039 ext.4013 or craig.summers@haymed.org for an application or more information.  Pre-registration is required.
