MedWest-Harris joins local doctors and other healthcare volunteers to provide hundreds of free physicals to area student athletes
Sylva, N.C. – MedWest-Harris recently joined local doctors and other healthcare volunteers to provide more than 250 free physicals to area student athletes.
Smoky Mountain High School and Cherokee High School students as well as seventh- and eighth-graders from Jackson County received screenings.
The physical examinations were provided free of charge. Each student received a basic health screen that checked height, weight, blood pressure and vision, as well as an orthopedic screen and an evaluation by a physician.
Coordinated by Judson Garbarino, MD of Carolina West Sports Medicine in Sylva, the event brought together many volunteers from the local medical community, including high school and college students, nurses, X-ray technicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and medical doctors.
Garbarino and his staff also performed more than 120 physicals for students attending the Blue Ridge and Highlands schools. In addition to Garbarino, other doctors who participated were Brooke Budde, DO, FAAP; Christian Moretz, MD; Penny O'Neill, MD; William Ralston, DO; Judy Seago, MD; and Martin A. Senicki, DO.
Other volunteers included Jamie Ellington, Rita Moss, NP, Hannah S. Hill, PA-C, and Travis Stuckey PA-C volunteered, as did Lynette Mount, Jennifer Murray, Jessica Johnson, Olivia Johnson, Kyrie Gogolin, Jerry Sullivan, Emily Martin, Anne Smallwood, Jenn Mroz, Catherine Bevilacqua, Gabe Peterson, Grant Shanks, Dave Wheatley, Jill Manners, Amber Schosser, Jon Mitzel, Anna King, Ashley Long, Sarah Spencer, Deanna Crone, Anita Johnson, Molly Nardello, Diane Winstead, Aleana Seago, Curt Lewis, Linneah Taylor, Aaron Marshall, Niki Duff, Edith Callahan, Zach Mason and Jay Scifers.
Carolina West Sports Medicine provides a full spectrum of sports medicine coverage. In addition to its physicians, Carolina West Sports Medicine’s providers include physical therapists specializing in orthopedic and sports medicine rehabilitation.
The practice’s physical therapy clinic is in the Ramsey Center at Western Carolina University. Carolina West Sports Medicine’s outreach program consists of certified athletic trainers who provide coverage for Cherokee, Smoky Mountain, Swain County, and Robbinsville High Schools, as well Blue Ridge and Highlands Schools. The practice also provides team physician coverage to Western Carolina University.
The Carolina West Sports Medicine physicians' clinic is in the West Entrance of MedWest-Harris in Sylva and is staffed with orthopedic surgeons who evaluate all sports injuries from the Little League athlete to the weekend warrior.
