Golf tournament held May 12 raised thousands of dollars for chaplaincy program at MedWest-Harris and MedWest-Swain

Sylva and Bryson City, N.C. – More than 80 golfers participated in the 5th Annual MedWest-Harris & Swain Foundation Chaplaincy Golf Tournament and helped raise more than $7,000 on May 12 for the chaplaincy program at MedWest-Harris and MedWest-Swain.

"Funds raised from this event are used for chaplains who are available to provide a spiritual presence and support for patients at our hospitals,” said Ron Allen, director of the chaplaincy program. “The chaplains are available to provide support to families and patients of all religions and are available to assist in contacting a patient’s church or faith representative.”

The team of Kevin Wells, Jay Eagleman, Terrance Taylor and Pepper Taylor placed first at the golf tournament at the Smoky Mountain Country Club in Whittier. Mason Harland won a free year’s membership at club by winning the putting contest.

“The chaplaincy golf tournament is one way the MedWest-Harris & Swain Foundation demonstrates support for our patients, their families and our staff by funding this very important resource at our hospitals,” said Heather Baker, chairman of the MedWest-Harris & Swain Foundation. “Our foundation is committed to providing resources necessary to deliver these services.”

The MedWest-Harris and MedWest-Swain Foundation was created to ensure quality healthcare for people in Western North Carolina now and in the future. The Foundation endowment is a permanent fund that grows from tax-deductible gifts and earnings. Funds are used for community programs like the hospitals’ chaplaincy program, as well for state-of- the-art medical equipment, staff development and new and innovative health services.
