Expanded Orthopaedic Therapy Services and Occupational Therapy/Hand Therapy Services now open at MedWest Outpatient Care Center in Clyde

Clyde, N.C. – MedWest Health System has opened its expanded Orthopaedic Therapy Services and Occupational Therapy/Hand Therapy Services in the MedWest Outpatient Care Center on the MedWest-Haywood campus in Clyde. 

Expanded services at the new location include general physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech-language pathology, said Chuck Nettles, DPT, director of rehabilitation and sports medicine services at MedWest-Haywood. Specialized services include orthopedic-sports rehabilitation, spine and orthopedic manual therapy, and hand rehabilitation for upper extremity disorders. 

Rehabilitation services at the MedWest Outpatient Care Center include a sports and performance enhancement section, a state-of-the-art hand and upper extremity rehabilitation suite, a back and neck rehabilitation center, sports and orthopedic equipment, a computerized hand function simulator, and athletic training for injured athletes, Nettles said. 

Expanded hand therapy services include staff specially trained in hand rehabilitation. Also located in the new MedWest Outpatient Care Center is Western Carolina Orthopaedic Specialists PA, a practice that includes hand specialist Paul J. Cutting, MD. Cutting manages the full spectrum of orthopaedic conditions and has a special interest in hand and upper extremity problems, including traumatic injuries of the hand and wrist, fractures and nonunions, nerve and tendon injuries, Dupuytren’s disease and problems related to osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. 

The expanded rehabilitation services at the MedWest Outpatient Care Center are being delivered by 35 physical, occupational, speech and athletic training experts. Nettles said that “it is uncommon to have this level of expertise and this number of clinicians in a community our size.” 

The Outpatient Care Center also houses such MedWest-Haywood services as radiology, outpatient surgery including endoscopy procedures, and women’s imaging and breast services. 

Consistent with MedWest’s community-based strategy, expanded physical therapy and rehabilitation services are conveniently located in four locations in Canton, Clyde and Hazelwood – MedWest Rehab Canton, the MedWest Rehab and Wound Center, the MedWest Rehab Health and Fitness Center, and the MedWest Outpatient Care Center. 

Focus of care at all of these locations includes excellence in patient satisfaction, advanced “evidence-based” interventions and personalized care, Nettles said.  

“Our expansion of services is allowing us to address the growing need our community has voiced for more rehabilitative care,” said Nettles, adding that this need is being driven in part by the rising number of people age 65 and older in the region. “This expansion addresses the current and future needs of our community and aging adults.” 

MedWest’s expanded rehabilitation services also include: 

•Neurorehabilitation, a women’s continence and pelvic dysfunction program, speech language rehabilitation, aquatic physical therapy, balance and vestibular therapy, lymphedema therapy and general physical therapy at MedWest Rehabilitation at the Health and Fitness Center; 

•Industrial rehabilitation, orthopedic and sports rehabilitation, and general physical therapy at MedWest Rehab Canton; and 

•Advanced wound care and general physical therapy at MedWest Rehab and Wound Care.

The expanded therapy services at the MedWest Outpatient Care Center in Clyde are housed in 5,200 square feet at the center at 581 Leroy George Dr. between the MedWest Health and Fitness Center and the hospital.
